**The age of the universe and Hubble's Law**

By measuring how far it is to nearer galaxies and relating this to how fast they are moving away (red shift and the expansion of the universe) we can then measure the red shift of distant galaxies and estimate their distance from us. If we know how fast the galaxies are moving away from one another and how far apart they are, then we can work backwards to estimate the length of time they have been moving and hence the age of the universe. 3m
