Astronomy video lessons included on the data stick

The data stick of video lessons for 16 to 19 year old students contains the following astronomy video lessons to buy:

Astronomical distances units

A brief explanation of the various units of distance measurement used in astronomy and the connection between them 3.5m

Big bang and evidence

A description of the theory of the creation of the universe and subsequent stages of expansion. 10m

Hertzsprung Russell diagrams and Cepheid variables

An explanation of real and apparent brightness and how a Hertzsprung Russell diagram  and Cepheid variables can be used to estimate the distance from earth. 6m

Hubble’s Law

Explaining the reasoning behind the law and the connection between red shift and the expansion of the universe moving on to show how the value of Hubble's constant is used to estimate the distance to another galaxies. 4m

Measuring distance by parallax

Explaining, using a simple practical demonstration, the basic idea of measuring distance by parallax / triangulation. 3.5m

Measuring distance to the moon and near planets

The use of lasers and radar to measure distances for everyday purpose is now common. Both devices are used to measure much larger distance to the moon and nearby planets. 1.5m

Satellites Geostationary and polar

Aiming to demonstrate and the types of satellite orbit and calculations on height and speed related to (Newtonian) explanation of the gravitational field. 5m

Stars - life cycle

Showing and explaining the stages of development and decline of stars similar in size to our sun and much larger. 6m

The age of the universe and Hubble's Law

By measuring how far it is to nearer galaxies and relating this to how fast they are moving away (red shift and the expansion of the universe) we can then measure the red shift of distant galaxies and estimate their distance from us. If we know how fast the galaxies are moving away from one another and how far apart they are, then we can work backwards to estimate the length of time they have been moving and hence the age of the universe. 3m

Type 1a supernova

A brief explanation of type 1a supernova and how the observation can be used to measure distance. 2m

Also see Doppler Effect and Red Shift within the waves section.
